Privacy Policy
Effective September 26, 2026
Afterread is a Chrome extension that summarizes articles and keeps a library of what you read. It is built to keep your data on your own computer. This page explains exactly what it stores, what it sends, and where.
What Afterread stores
Everything Afterread saves is stored locally in your browser (IndexedDB and chrome.storage.local):
- the text, title, and address of articles you choose to summarize;
- summaries, categories, tags, connections between articles, reviews, and your follow-up questions and answers;
- your settings, including the API key for the AI provider you choose.
There is no Afterread account and no Afterread server. We never receive, see, or store this data. You can export it as JSON from Settings, and removing the extension deletes it.
What Afterread sends, and to whom
When you summarize an article, ask a question, find connections, translate a summary, or write a review, Afterread sends the relevant text (article text, excerpts from your library, and your question) directly from your browser to the AI provider you selected in Settings, together with your API key. It is not routed through us.
That provider handles the request under its own terms and privacy policy. Some free tiers may log prompts or use them to improve their models; Settings notes this for the providers where we know it applies. If that matters to you, choose a provider whose terms you’re comfortable with.
Apart from these requests, and loading your provider’s list of models when you ask for it in Settings, Afterread makes no network requests. It contains no analytics, tracking, or advertising code.
Why the extension asks for its permissions
- AI provider sites (for example
api.anthropic.com,openrouter.ai): to send your requests to the provider you choose. These are the only sites Afterread can reach when it is installed. - Read the pages you visit (optional,
<all_urls>): asked for only when you click “Allow reading pages” in the side panel. It lets Afterread extract the readable text of the article in the active tab. Page text is only read while the side panel is open, and it is sent to your AI provider only when you summarize or ask. The same optional permission covers a custom API endpoint you set up, such as a local Ollama server. You can revoke it any time in Chrome’s extension settings. - Scripting: to run the bundled text extractor (Mozilla Readability) in the active tab.
- Side panel: to show Afterread next to the page.
- Storage and unlimited storage: to keep your library and settings locally, however large your library grows.
This website
afterread.cloudquit.com is a static site hosted on Cloudflare, which may keep standard server logs (such as IP address and user agent) for security and operations. The site sets no cookies and uses no analytics. It remembers your theme and language choice in your browser’s local storage.
